2011 Spar Weekend Witness Ladies 10km Race

I started my training this week for the upcoming June 5 km challenge with me and my girlfriends.  I am not sure where we will run this trial race but I hope to use that opportunity to test my fitness in preparation for the longer 10 km run in September! On the right hand side is this weeks training schedule which I will incorporate to my usual training days on Tuesdays; Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

 Wish me luck!

"We are 24 weeks to go until the 2011 Spar Weekend Witness Ladies 10km and 5km run and walks around Alexander Park in Pietermaritzburg.

The morning of Sunday 18th September is a time when ladies from throughout the province get the opportunity to take on the challenge of exercising around the two lap course. The 10km distance is also a great indicator of your potential at all longer distances: the faster a runner is over 10km, the faster they will be in the half marathon, marathon, Two Oceans and even Comrades.

All in all there is no easier distance to use as a gauge of fitness and improvement, and the great thing is that you don’t have to indulge in a major training programme to achieve some reasonable performance improvement. So what do you need? Generally training three to four days per week will be sufficient for most participants with the more established runners hitting a five day week, and the top contenders going for six days. Training for 10km is something most people can find time to fit into their lives without substantial compromise to their normal work, family and social routines.

So what are the first steps?

Firstly – where we are now?
Secondly - where we are going to?
And thirdly – even if it takes a bit longer – how we are going to get there!

So as you read this take a few minutes to decide for yourself – what is your current fitness level over the 10km distance, and what improvement you would realistically like to achieve over the next few months. Then finally you can determine how you are going to get from where you are now - to where you want to be."
